David Albert Monroe Jr.
Nickname: Romeo
Birthdate: June 21, 1982
Paroling to: Sacramento, California
Why did you join the T.R.U.S.T.?
My initial reason for joining the T.R.U.S.T. was so that I could give back and help others change their lives. I soon realized that it was they who were helping me change mine!
What does being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow mean to you?
Being a T.R.U.S.T. Fellow means that I have the opportunity to assist others in their change and that I am on the right path because I am surrounded by a bunch of great men who not only promote positive change but lead by example.
Since coming to prison, what have you accomplished?
I’ve completed my G.E.D., trades in upholstery and sheet metal, S.Q.U.I.R.E.S., R.E.A.C.H., Change is Possible, N.A., all of which have helped me in becoming a better person and an asset to the T.R.U.S.T. group.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
Some of my hobbies include exercising, sports, and drawing. Some of my interests include poetry, writing (music, poetry, book) and music.
What programs are you involved with other than the T.R.U.S.T.?
I am involved in the S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. program, which is a youth mentoring program in San Quentin. Through this program, I have been able to touch the lives of at-risk youth and give them hope and strength to make a change and do something better with their lives.
What kind of work do you do with the “inside” and/or “outside” communities?
Besides the work I do with the T.R.U.S.T., I work with S.Q.U.I.R.E.S.
How do you live up to the T.R.U.S.T. value system?
By carrying myself with maturity, respect, and integrity in order to lead by example.
How do you promote the ideals of the T.R.U.S.T. outside the workshops?
I would like to continue the work I have started in here with the T.R.U.S.T. and S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. program and to start a family with my Boo-Boo!
What do you want to do after you parole?
To be married with two kids, own my own youth recreation center, and write a book for at-risk youth.
What are your long-term goals?
To be a motivational speaker to youth upon release, start a family, and help my wife run a group home.
Personal message to the outside community:
Remember that the people behind these walls are your brothers and sisters, your moms and dads, your cousins; and throwing away family is a waste.
So often we waste our time trying to get even with those who have harmed us. Let's spend more time trying to get even with those who have helped us.
